Pleasanton is a small town, less than 11,000 in population, situated 37 miles south of San Antonio. Established in 1858, it is known as “The City of Live Oaks and Friendly Folks.”
The atmosphere is definitely oilfield and cowboys. Some say the original cowboys came from Pleasanton. The rich empresarios hired the cowboys to defend against raids and thieves, and this steady flow of income caused the original town of Pleasanton to thrive, eventually becoming the Atascosa County Seat. Every year in October, Pleasanton hosts the “Cowboy Homecoming Festival”, which commemorates the time when the cowboys driving cattle from South Texas to the railheads up north would return home. Part of the film The Sugarland Express was filmed in Pleasanton
The Longhorn Museum welcomes visitors daily and the Atascosa Livestock Exchange sells cattle weekly. There are beautiful parks for your family to enjoy, and one is on the Medina River, a tributary of the San Antonio River.
Pleasanton is situated a short drive south of San Antonio, where there is endless entertainment and festivals, including the famous River Walk.
Pleasanton has the best of both worlds: a smaller town where your kids can flourish, yet close enough to an entertainment center like San Antonio to keep you busy on date nights.
